Volunteering with Delphix
Written by Estelle Chou (Berkeley '15, Delphix intern, Summer 2014)
Serving the community has always been a passion of mine. In the past, I've participated in a variety of volunteer events with different groups and organizations. My experiences have opened my eyes to the importance of giving back to the community, so working for a company that strives to contribute to society is important to me.
This summer I found Delphix, an exciting startup with a great product, great team and great values. At the start of summer, I was excited to join the Delphix team as a Marketing Intern. I knew I would be taking on a lot of responsibility and learning new information about marketing in the tech industry, but I didn't expect to learn about the impacts of a local soup kitchen and the SF Food Bank.
Participating in two separate volunteer events with Delphix over the summer was one of the highlights of my internship. I first volunteered at St. Anthony's in Menlo Park with the rest of the Delphix interns, sorting the non-perishable items to prepare the meals. It was eye- opening to learn about the process of donating produce to soup kitchens like St. Anthony's and how much labor is behind making them run.
The second event was a company outing at the SF Food Bank, in which we bagged rice to be donated to families in need. Bagging rice involved teamwork and accuracy to ensure securely packaged bags. At both events, I also got the chance to learn more about the other interns and employees at Delphix I wouldn't otherwise normally get to interact with; spending a couple of hours standing around together and packing food, you have a chance to really engage with one another.
All in all, I really enjoyed the opportunity to get hands-on and see the progress we were able to make in a short time. One hour of volunteering for us can mean food for so many, and it was great to be able to make an impact with Delphix. This care for the community makes me proud to say I was apart of the Delphix team this Summer and that I will be returning full time after graduation!
