Database Virtualization at a Datacenter Near You

Being an early adopter of technology I became passionate about the Netezza analytic Appliance in 2002 and was the first to put it into production. I still believe it is the absolute best solution for managing VLDB data to provide complex analytics and reporting capabilities. I was there for almost eight years being the longest time I worked for any company. It was fun to be part of an early stage company that provided tremendous value to its customers, was easy to do business with and changed the market by leading the charge in producing a real database appliance that caused such a disruption that all the leading providers of database software followed in their footsteps.

But all good things must come to an end.

Since the acquisition of Netezza by IBM things just got too complex for me and it became difficult to make things happen in a company of 400 thousand plus employees. I knew the time was coming for me to move on . I also knew that if I was to stay in sales I would need to find a technology that i could be passionate about and provide technical and monetary value to my customers. I found that technology. Delphix was introduced to me and I immediately saw the tremendous benefits for the customer. In a short time I have developed the same passion for Delphix as I did with Netezza. Once again my path has crossed with a company that is revolutionizing the database industry with an approach to virtualization unlike anything available today. A company that is easy to do business with and customer focused. I am excited to have the opportunity to be part of something that is disruptive and the only offering of its kind.

Data volumes continue to grow and as data gets bigger everything else gets more difficult. Delphix gives you the ability to do 500% more, reduce storage costs by 95% and recover 98% faster from downtime. We have all been under the crunch to deliver new application functionality, find and recover from user data corruption, allow for operational reporting on mission critical databases with minimal impact on transaction processing and produce copies usable by developers, testers and QA. These are very labor-intensive tasks that are both costly in people-time and infrastructure.

Delphix simplifies the complexities while freeing up technical staff to provide value and reducing costly infrastructure. Delphix uses innovative technology to produce a single synchronized compressed copy of any production environment and then allows users through a graphical time machine to virtualize what I like to call a “free copy” to any point in time. Why I coined the phrase “free copy” is because once you create your first copy the data need not be duplicated again. The technology uses pointers to determine exactly what blocks need to be served to satisfy the users request. It provisions a local database instance to support any user changes but never copies the data to the local instance. All done automatically with typically three clicks.

I spent years deploying and supporting database for development, testing and production. This technology provides the capabilities to resolve production issues quickly while eliminating the mundane work intensive tasks and cost of supporting non-production databases and managing costly infrastructure. This is a disruptive, game changing technology. Having passion is awesome and being part of another disruptive technology company like Delphix is very exciting.
